Dr. Shanéa Thomas, LICSW (he/she/Dr.) is the LGBTQ+ Training Specialist and Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Maryland School of Public Health through the Prevention Research Center. He is a seasoned scholar-practitioner with more than 18 years of professional clinical social work experience in the Washington D.C. metro area. Her main commitment in the field is training and strategizing with social workers, educators, and service providers around building safer therapeutic and educational spaces for all people. This is especially for those working in communities that are underserved and under-resourced, and those identifying as Black, Indigenous, people of color, and LGBTQI+ folks. Dr. Thomas has facilitated over 80 workshops centering DEI needs, grief and loss, mental health, sex and gender, and LGBTQI+ populations. He has recently curated a national training program which launched in May 2023 using the Prevention Research Center's evidence-based tools to build LGBTQ+ competency in practice amongst mental health professionals.

Session 2: Intimate Partner Violence and LGBTQIA2S+ People

LB Klein, PhD, MSW, MPA (they/she) is an assistant professor in the Sandra Rosenbaum School of Social Work and core faculty member of the Sexual Violence Research Initiative at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Klein leads the Gender, LGBTQ+, Interpersonal Trauma, and Translational Equity Research or GLITTER Lab. Their transdisciplinary research focuses on gender-based violence (GBV; e.g., sexual assault/harassment, intimate partner violence, stalking, and anti-queer/trans harassment) prevention, trauma- and violence-informed care, and LGBTQIA2S+ health. As an advocate, educator, program director, evaluator, trainer, researcher, and consultant, Dr. Klein has worked to prevent and respond to interpersonal violence for nearly two decades.

Session 3: Teamwork Makes the Dream Work: Collaboratively Supporting LGBTQ+ Students and Families Navigate Complex Educational Systems

Timothy Q. Elliott (they/he) is a clinical social worker licensed in Maryland, Virginia, and DC who is a recognized expert in trauma healing as well as gender and sexual identity development. They emphasize a strengths-based, depathologizing approach to supporting clients’ journey to wellness and have been in the DC metro area since 2009 working in schools, outpatient mental health facilities, and government agencies - he has seen firsthand how systems function or fail in supporting the social-emotional needs of LGBTQ youth.  He now owns and operates a private psychotherapy practice in Arlington, VA providing individual and family therapy primarily to LGBTQ+ young people and families. They incorporate a variety of strength-based therapeutic approaches within their practice, including eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), art therapy techniques, sand/play therapy, somatic interventions, and other mind-body modalities. Timothy has spoken at local and national conferences on a variety of topics within mental health. He was awarded the 2017 Youth Champion of the Year award by the DC Center for the LGBT Community. He has served on the Leadership Council for the District of Columbia’s Victim Assistance Network (2017-2019) and currently co-chairs the Advisory Council for Rainbow Youth Alliance, an adult-facilitated peer-to-peer support group for LGBTQ teens in Rockville, MD. Timothy is committed to lifting LGBTQ youth voices and challenging providers to do better.
